Solar System Maintenance: A Homeowner Guide for Harare

Why Solar System Maintenance Matters in Harare
A well-maintained solar system performs better, lasts longer, and saves you more money. Yet many Harare homeowners install a solar system and then forget about it, assuming it will take care of itself indefinitely. While solar systems are relatively low-maintenance compared to generators, they do need regular attention to deliver optimal performance year after year.
At Solar Harare, we provide ongoing maintenance services across Borrowdale, Highlands, Mount Pleasant, and all Harare suburbs. This guide shares the practical maintenance routines we recommend to every homeowner we work with.
Monthly Checks You Can Do Yourself
Monitor Your System Output
Most modern inverters, whether Deye, Sunsynk, or Victron, come with monitoring apps that show daily and monthly energy production. Get into the habit of checking your system output at least once a week. A sudden drop in generation often indicates an issue that needs attention.
Compare your monthly generation figures. In Harare, you should see higher output from September to March (summer) and lower output from May to August (winter). If your winter output drops more than expected, or summer numbers are lower than the previous year, something may be wrong.
Visual Panel Inspection
Once a month, take a few minutes to look at your solar panels from ground level. You are checking for:
- Visible dirt, bird droppings, or leaf accumulation
- Any physical damage like cracks or chips
- Loose mounting brackets or frames
- Vegetation or tree branches casting new shadows on the panels
In Harare, the dry season from May to October is when dust accumulation is worst. Panels in suburbs near construction activity or unpaved roads may need more frequent attention.
Battery Room Check
If you have lead acid batteries, check the water levels monthly and top up with distilled water as needed. Look for any signs of corrosion on terminals (white or greenish deposits) and clean them with a wire brush if present.
For lithium battery owners, monthly checks are simpler. Ensure the battery room or enclosure has adequate ventilation, check that the battery management system (BMS) indicator lights show normal operation, and confirm there are no unusual smells or sounds.
Quarterly Maintenance Tasks
Panel Cleaning
In Harare's environment, we recommend cleaning your solar panels every 3 months as a minimum. During the dry season, monthly cleaning yields noticeably better performance.
The best approach for panel cleaning is simple: use clean water and a soft cloth or sponge. Clean early in the morning or late in the afternoon when panels are cool. Never spray cold water on hot panels as the thermal shock can cause micro-cracks in the glass.
Avoid using any abrasive materials, harsh detergents, or high-pressure washers. These can scratch the panel surface or damage the anti-reflective coating, permanently reducing output.
Inverter Inspection
Check your inverter every three months for:
- Error codes or warning lights on the display
- Dust accumulation on ventilation grilles (clean with a soft brush)
- Unusual buzzing or humming sounds
- Secure cable connections with no signs of overheating (discolouration around terminals)
Annual Professional Service
Once a year, we recommend having a professional solar technician conduct a thorough system service. At Solar Harare, our annual maintenance visits include:
- Full electrical testing of all connections and cable integrity
- Inverter firmware updates
- Battery health testing and capacity check
- Panel output testing (comparing individual panel performance)
- Mounting hardware inspection and tightening
- Earth leakage and safety system verification
- System performance report with recommendations
An annual service typically takes 2 to 3 hours and gives you peace of mind that everything is operating safely and efficiently. It also helps catch small issues before they become expensive problems.
Harare-Specific Maintenance Considerations
Storm Season Preparation
Harare's thunderstorm season from November to March brings heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning. Before storm season, check that all panel mounting bolts are tight, ensure your lightning protection system is functional, and verify that your inverter's surge protection is working.
After any severe storm, do a visual inspection of your panels for hail damage and check your inverter for error codes that might indicate a lightning surge event.
Mango and Msasa Season
If you have large trees near your home, falling leaves and fruit can be a seasonal issue. Mango trees in particular can deposit sticky residue on panels that is harder to clean than regular dust. If your home in Chisipite or Highlands has overhanging trees, consider more frequent cleaning during fruiting season.
When to Call a Professional
Contact your solar installer (that is us, hopefully) if you notice:
- A significant drop in daily generation that cleaning does not fix
- Error codes on your inverter that do not clear after a restart
- Any burning smell or visible scorching around electrical connections
- Battery swelling, leaking, or unusual odours
- System not switching to battery during load shedding
- Noticeable reduction in battery backup duration
Do not attempt to diagnose or repair electrical issues yourself. Solar systems operate at high DC voltages that can be dangerous. Always call a qualified technician.
The Cost of Neglect
We regularly assess systems installed by other companies where basic maintenance has been ignored for years. Common findings include panels operating at 60% to 70% of their rated capacity due to dirt accumulation, batteries that have failed years early due to neglected water levels, and inverters with clogged ventilation causing overheating and reduced lifespan.
The cost of regular maintenance is minimal compared to the cost of replacing components prematurely. A few hours of attention each quarter keeps your system earning its keep for decades.
Solar Harare offers maintenance packages for both systems we have installed and those installed by other companies. Craig Riley and our team are committed to keeping Harare's solar systems performing at their best. Get in touch to discuss a maintenance plan that suits your system and budget.
